The Immunization of Troops with Typhus Vaccine and the Characteristics of Typhus in Immunized Individuals *

چکیده
The entry of the United States into World War II, with exposure of Army troops to epidemic (louse-borne) typhus fever in many parts of the world, called for the use of adequate protective measures against this disease. One important aspect of this protection was the compulsory immunization with epidemic typhus vaccine of all soldiers going to, or stationed in, areas where epidemic typhus was present or suspected. The excellent protection afforded U. S. Army personnel by this prophylactic immunization has already been reported by Sadusk.20 Similar information, including the incidence of typhus fever in the U. S. Army during the war years ( 1942-46 inclusive), notes on the severity of the disease and modification of the clinical course in a limited number of cases, and remarks on the serological diagnosis of typhus in patients who have been inoculated with vaccine prior to onset of the disease, are presented here.

Protection against scrub typhus by a plasmid vaccine encoding the 56-KD outer membrane protein antigen gene.
The 56-kD outer membrane protein of Orientia tsutsugamushi has previously been shown to be the immunodominant antigen in scrub typhus infections. Its gene was cloned into the DNA vaccine vector pVR1012 as a vaccine candidate (pKarp56). The in vitro expression of this 56-kD antigen by pKarp56 was confirmed in tissue culture by an indirect fluorescence assay and Western blot analysis. The initial...
متن کاملProtective immunity of 56-kDa type-specific antigen of Orientia tsutsugamushi causing scrub typhus.
Scrub typhus, caused by infection with Orientia tsutsugamushi, is a mite-borne zoonotic disease endemic to the Asian-Pacific region. In Korea, the incidence of this disease has increased with climate changes, and over 10,000 cases of infection were reported in 2013. Although this infection is treatable with antibiotics such as doxycycline and azithromycin, an effective prophylactic vaccine agai...

PRECISE INTERPRETATION OF OUR EXPERIMENTS SEEMS TO IMPOSE THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS: Guinea pigs inoculated with washed Rickettsiae from Mexican typhus fever develop a disease identical with that resulting from inoculations with whole tunica scrapings, blood or other virulent material, and become thereby immunized to European typhus fever. The etiological agent of Mexican typhus fever is the Ri...
متن کاملGamma-irradiated scrub typhus immunogens: development of cell-mediated immunity after vaccination of inbred mice.
Mice immunized with three injections of gamma-irradiated Karp strain of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi were evaluated for the presence of cell-mediated immunity by using delayed-type hypersensitivity, antigen-induced lymphocyte proliferation, and antigen-induced lymphokine production. These animals also were evaluated for levels of circulating antibody after immunization as well as for the presence o...

A llen's narrative is set in eastern Europe just before and during the Second World War. The subject is typhus and 2 microbiologists who were engaged frenetically in producing vaccines against it. The lives of the microbiologists—Rudolf Weigl, a Ger-man zoologist, and Ludwig Fleck, a Jewish physician—in-tersected in Lwow, eastern Poland. When the First World War broke, Weigl, stationed nearby t...
